The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with acclaimed director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice and Atonement), is a bold, theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, adapted from Leo Tolstoy's timeless novel. Set in late-19th-century Russian high-society, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart.

This story has been filmed many times, but never with this kind of erotic charge. Knightley is glorious. My advice is to let Wright's Anna Karenina work its strange and marvelous spell. - Rolling Stone

In the casting coup of the season, Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren join together to portray Alfred Hitchcock and his wife and professional partner, Alma. Together they created some of the most memorable films in cinema history. This story focuses on the irascible filmmaker as he tackles the creation of Psycho. Forced to finance it on his own even after a long, successful career, we witness the sometimes funny and occasionally dark creative impulses that led to this remarkable classic of cinema. Hopkins and Mirren provide an entertaining and nuanced look inside a loving and collaborative marriage. Scarlett Johanssen costars, portraying Vivian Leigh.

An entertaining…thoroughly enjoyable glimpse into a familiar artist's creative process. - San Francisco Chronicle

The Crash Reel

7 PM

Directed by Lucy Walker
Rated Not Rated, 109 min.

Underwritten by Sundance Institute

Part of the Reel Community Series

This eye-popping, yet intimate, story of U.S. champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce uses years of vérité footage to expose the excitement and appeal, as well as the high stakes, of participating in extreme-action sports. Training to compete against longtime rival Shaun White at the 2010 Winter Olympics, Kevin suffered severe traumatic brain injury from a 2009 accident in Park City, Utah. His tight-knit Vermont family flew to his side, and together they began an intensive process of trying to rehabilitate him and help him rebuild his permanently damaged life. Kevin’s determination and the tireless support of family and friends kept him focused on recovery. But when he insisted he wanted to return to the sport he loved, his family objected. As an elite athlete, Kevin was a professional risk taker, but as a brain-injury survivor, his skills were now impaired, and even a small blow to the head could kill him.

Academy Award–nominated director Lucy Walker’s latest film (Waste Land won the World Cinema Documentary Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival) sheds light on the alarming trend of athletes pushing the boundaries of their sports past the limit. How much risk is too much? Her thoughtful and probing treatment of her subject enables us to share one family’s remarkable journey. – L. V. – Sundance Film Festival 2013 Online Film Guide

The film screening will be followed by Q&A and a moderated panel discussion with: Gail Loveland, Executive Director, National Ability Center, Tracy Meier, Training and Education Manager, National Ability Center, Holly Ledyard, University of Utah Clinical Neurosciences Center (the doctor who treated Kevin) and Meredith Lavitt, Sundance Institute, Moderator.

Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation @ 3 PM
As big of an impression as the old serials had left on young Spielberg and Lucas, Indiana Jones left an even bigger one on three Mississippi 12-year-olds. In 1982, childhood friends Eric Zala, Chris Strompolos, and Jayson Lamb began filming a shot-for-shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. They filmed during school vacations, used the back yard for locations, and fashioned props (like that well-known giant boulder) in the family garage. Six years later, after the lead actor shot up six inches and his voice dropped to a baritone, the film was in the can.
