This is a charming and joyous comedy about growing up in California. During the summer of 1979, a Santa Barbara single mom and boardinghouse landlord decides the best way she can parent her teenage son is to enlist her young tenants - a quirky punk photographer, a mellow handyman and her son's shrewd best friend - to serve as role models in a changing world.
There's not a single false, "actor-y" note in Benning's work. It is a master class innuanced acting, and it is deserving of an Academy Award. - Chicago Sun-Times
