Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman star in a sophisticated geo-political comedy directed by the insightful Mike Nichols. It is the 1980s and the Soviet Union is fighting for control in Afghanistan. Hanks plays a Texas congressman who likes to play things fast and loose. He is approached by a wealthy supporter who pushes him to get money from the CIA to fight a covert war against the Soviets. The film chronicles the unbelievable but true story of how this congressman helps the freedom fighters of Afghanistan defeat the Russians creating unexpected consequences for the U.S. two decades later.

Smart-edge, wickedly funny. - Roger Ebert, Chicago-Sun Times
