Directed by Timur Bekmambetov
Rated R, 114 min. - subtitled

This film has attracted a cult sci-fi audience due to its eye-popping special effects and the fact that Russian sci-fi films are so rare and exotic. Two bands of underworld figures battle to keep the peace in Moscow in this polished thriller. It is the 14th century and the Warriors of Darkness and Light have declared a truce allowing each side to monitor the other side's activities. Is this an allegory for life in Russia today or a geo-political statement concerning the whole world? Each Watch group is comprised of others, mortals with supernatural powers. The film morphs to the early 21st century, when the Night Watch and Day Watch must deal with a massively powerful other whose strength could destroy the fragile balance between Light and Dark. Night Watch was a big box-office success in its native Russia.

A wildly entertaining fantasy thriller. - San Francisco Chronicle
